LingunAI vs Duolingo

LingunAI is a Duolingo alternative for adults who've done the basics: instead of short gamified lessons, you read stories and articles written at your CEFR level and review the words you keep. Here's how they compare, including where Duolingo is the better pick.

Checked October 2026

The short answer

Choose Duolingo if you're starting from zero and want short, game-like lessons that make a daily habit easy. Choose LingunAI if you're past the basics and want to read stories and articles at your CEFR level, keep the words that stop you and practice real conversations with feedback. They also work well together: Duolingo for the daily habit, LingunAI for reading and vocabulary.

What Duolingo does well

Duolingo made daily language practice feel easy, and that’s a real achievement. Its short lessons lower the cost of starting: a few minutes a day, a clear path to follow, and instant feedback on every answer. Streaks, XP and leagues turn practice into a habit, and for many people the hardest part of learning a language is simply showing up.

It’s also genuinely beginner-friendly. You can open a language you know nothing about, and the drills introduce sounds, words and basic sentence patterns in small steps. Duolingo covers many languages, is built mobile-first with a website as well, and its core lessons are free. Its Max tier adds AI features such as Explain My Answer, Roleplay and Video Call.

If you’re a complete beginner, or what you mainly need is a reason to practice every day, Duolingo does that job well.

Where LingunAI is different

LingunAI is built for the stage after the basics, when drills stop paying off and you need to read and use the language for real. The idea is simple: read things you want to read, at your level; keep the words that stop you; review them until they stick.

  • Reading at your level. StorySplice writes a complete story of 50 to 500 words at any CEFR level from A1 to C2, built around words you choose. The article reader rewrites an article you paste at your level, keeping the facts.
  • Your vocabulary, your schedule. Select any word to save it as a flashcard. Cards come back after 1, 3, 7 and 15 days by default, and you can design your own review patterns.
  • Conversation with feedback. Roleplay scenes such as a job interview or a doctor visit run at your level, and end with a score, corrections and more natural phrasings.
  • Writing help. The grammar coach checks up to 5,000 characters and gives the reason for each change in its rewrite.

The tone is different, too. LingunAI has daily goals, a streak counter and a weekly leaderboard, but they sit in the background. The work itself is reading, saving words and reviewing them.

Who should choose which

Choose Duolingo if:

  • you’re starting a language from zero
  • you want a guided path and short, game-like sessions
  • daily consistency is your main challenge

Choose LingunAI if:

  • you’ve done the basics, roughly A2 and up, and feel stuck
  • you’d rather read stories and articles than complete exercises
  • you want to choose your own words and your own level
  • you want speaking and writing practice with specific feedback

A common reason for the plateau around B1 is vocabulary. Beginner material covers the most frequent words, but real texts need far more: Hu and Nation (2000) found that understanding fiction without help takes about 98% known-word coverage, and Nation (2006) estimated that reaching that coverage in written text takes 8,000 to 9,000 word families. Reading a lot at your level, and reviewing the words you meet, is the practical way to close that gap. The guide to the intermediate plateau goes further.

Using Duolingo and LingunAI together

You don’t have to choose. A simple weekly routine:

  1. Keep your Duolingo habit with a short lesson each day.
  2. Read one LingunAI story or article at your level, and save the words that stop you.
  3. Review your due flashcards so those words come back on schedule.
  4. Once a week, run a roleplay scene and read the feedback.

As your reading gets easier, shift more of your time from drills to reading. If you want to compare other reading-first tools, see LingunAI vs LingQ, or check what the free plan includes on the pricing page.

Questions, answered

01 What is a good Duolingo alternative for adults?

For adults who have finished the basics, LingunAI is built for the next stage: it writes stories and rewrites articles at your CEFR level, from A1 to C2, turns the words you don't know into spaced-repetition flashcards, and adds roleplay and a grammar coach. If you're starting from zero and want a guided daily routine, Duolingo's structured lessons remain a solid choice.

02 Is LingunAI better than Duolingo for intermediate learners?

For intermediate learners who want to read more and drill less, LingunAI is the better fit. You choose the level of every story and article, the words that stop you become flashcards, and roleplay gives you feedback on real conversations. Duolingo's main strengths, short daily lessons and habit-building, matter most at the beginner stage.

03 Can I use LingunAI and Duolingo together?

Yes. One simple split is a short Duolingo lesson each day for the habit, and a LingunAI story or article at your level for reading, with the new words saved as flashcards. The two overlap very little, because Duolingo teaches mainly through drills and LingunAI through reading.

04 Does LingunAI have a mobile app like Duolingo?

No. LingunAI is a web app that runs in any modern browser on a phone, tablet or computer, with nothing to install. Duolingo is mobile-first, with apps for iOS and Android as well as a website.

05 Is LingunAI free like Duolingo?

LingunAI has a free plan with no card required. Flashcards you make by hand, review, quizzes, import and export are free and unlimited, and a one-time allowance of AI credits lets you try the AI tools, while paid plans add monthly credits. Duolingo's core lessons are free, with paid tiers called Super and Max.
