How it works

  1. 01

    Save a word

Select a word in a story, article, roleplay or tutor chat and choose Add to Flashcard. Pick a deck, then fill the card yourself or with AI.

  2. 02

    Review when due

Cards come due at your local midnight. Mark each one Remembered to move it up the ladder, or Forgot to send it back to the start.

  3. 03

    Quiz yourself

Run a free quiz of up to 20 cards, from fill the gap and synonyms to dictation and a matching round.

  4. 04

    Share or export

Publish a deck to the public library, copy decks other learners share, or export to CSV, Excel, JSON or an Anki-compatible text file.

How LingunAI flashcards work

LingunAI flashcards are vocabulary cards with spaced repetition built in: each card comes back for review at growing intervals, so you see it again just as you’re about to forget it. The idea rests on the spacing effect, which goes back to Hermann Ebbinghaus’s work on forgetting in 1885 and was confirmed across many studies in a meta-analysis by Cepeda et al. (2006).

The schedule is a Leitner-style ladder, named after the box system Sebastian Leitner described in the 1970s. Each review has two buttons:

  • Remembered moves the card up one interval.
  • Forgot sends it back to the first interval.

The default pattern, Classic, brings a card back after 1, 3, 7 and then 15 days. You can design your own patterns of up to 20 steps, each from 1 to 3,650 days, set any pattern as your default, or give a deck its own. Cards come due at your local midnight, with your time zone detected automatically. The spaced repetition guide covers the research in more depth.

Save words while you read

Most cards start inside something you’re reading. In a generated story, an article rewrite, a roleplay conversation or a tutor chat, select a word and choose “Add to Flashcard”. A popup lets you pick a deck or create one, then fill in a definition, synonyms, antonyms and two examples, by hand or with AI Magic Fill for 1 credit. The card stores the word you selected, not the sentence around it.

For cards you already have, “Fill with AI” (1 credit per card) writes a definition, synonyms, antonyms and five example sentences in the card’s own language.

Review, quizzes and AI Review

Review the cards that are due, practice with all your cards, or work through cards you select, filtered by deck and language. Keyboard shortcuts keep sessions quick, and each word is read aloud. You can keep up to 50 decks, and each can have its own language, review pattern and study mode: flip-card review, quiz, or both.

Quizzes are free and cover up to 20 cards per round, with these question types:

  • fill the gap, meaning and which word
  • synonym, opposite and odd one out
  • spelling (typed) and dictation (listen and type)
  • a matching round

Hints are there when you’re stuck: a hinted answer earns half marks and leaves that card’s schedule unchanged. Quizzes put retrieval practice to work, the testing effect that Roediger and Karpicke (2006) showed improves long-term retention more than studying the material again.

When the regular quiz feels easy, AI Review (1 credit) takes up to 10 of your hardest words and writes about 20 harder questions: words in context, word pairs, shades of meaning, spot the mistake and find the word.

Import, export and shared decks

  • Import. Paste lines in the format word | definition | synonyms | antonyms | examples, or upload a CSV, Excel (.xlsx) or JSON file of up to 5,000 rows. The preview is free, and AI fill is optional at 1 credit per word. “Release per day” drip-feeds new cards, so a big import doesn’t land in one sitting.
  • Export. Download your cards as CSV, Excel, JSON, or an Anki-compatible tab-separated text file.
  • Sharing. Keep a deck private, share it with friends, or publish it with a description, a reference and a CEFR level. The public library can be searched and filtered by language and level. Copy any deck into your account, and when its author updates it, pull in just the new words. Each shared deck has a leaderboard for today, this week and all time.

How flashcards connect to the rest of LingunAI

Your cards feed everything else. In StorySplice you pick words from your decks to build a story, with due cards marked, and words you already have are highlighted when they appear. In the article reader, key vocabulary goes into a deck with one button.

The result is a review queue made of words you actually met, each one tied to something you chose to read. If you’re coming from a dedicated flashcard app, see how the two approaches differ in LingunAI vs Anki.

Questions, answered

01 Does LingunAI use spaced repetition?

Yes. LingunAI uses a Leitner-style ladder: mark a card Remembered and it moves up one interval, mark it Forgot and it goes back to the first. The default Classic pattern brings a card back after 1, 3, 7 and 15 days, and you can design your own patterns of up to 20 steps.

02 Are LingunAI flashcards free?

Yes. Flashcards you make by hand, spaced repetition review, quizzes, import without AI and export are free and unlimited on every plan. Only the optional AI tools use credits: AI fill costs 1 credit per card and an AI Review round costs 1 credit.

03 Can I export LingunAI flashcards to Anki?

Yes. You can export your cards as an Anki-compatible tab-separated text file, as well as CSV, Excel and JSON. To bring cards in, paste lines or upload a CSV, Excel or JSON file of up to 5,000 rows.

04 Can I set my own review intervals?

Yes. You can design review patterns of up to 20 steps, each from 1 to 3,650 days, set one as your default, or give each deck its own. Cards come due at your local midnight, using the time zone LingunAI detects automatically.

05 What kinds of flashcard quizzes are there?

A LingunAI quiz covers up to 20 cards with fill the gap, meaning, which word, synonym, opposite, odd one out, typed spelling, dictation and a matching round. A hinted answer earns half marks and leaves that card's schedule unchanged. For a harder test, AI Review writes about 20 questions on up to 10 of your hardest words for 1 credit.
