What roleplay is
Roleplay is LingunAI’s AI conversation practice: a short, realistic scene in which an AI character talks with you in the language you’re learning, at your level. You pick the scene, the language, a CEFR level from A1 to C2 and your native language, and the character opens the conversation.
There are six ready-made scenes, plus one you design yourself:
- At the Café: order drinks and chat with the barista.
- Airport Check-in: check in for a flight and ask the agent your questions.
- Job Interview: answer an interviewer’s questions.
- Hotel Check-in: check in and ask about the hotel.
- Doctor Visit: describe your symptoms and understand the advice.
- Shopping: browse a store and ask about products.
- Custom Scene: any situation and any character you describe, from returning a faulty jacket to meeting your new neighbors.
How a conversation works
The character replies in one to three sentences in the target language, pitched at your level. It stays in the scene and keeps you in the language: it doesn’t interrupt to correct you, and if you slip into your own language, it answers in the target language to bring you back.
- Speak or type. Use your microphone through your browser’s built-in speech recognition, which works in Chrome, Edge and Safari, or type your reply.
- Listen. The character’s replies are read aloud with your browser’s text-to-speech.
- Save words. Select any word in the conversation and choose “Add to Flashcard” to keep it.
- Length and cost. A scene runs for up to 20 of your messages. Roleplay costs 2 credits for every 3 AI replies.
Conversations aren’t stored, so every scene is a fresh start.
The feedback at the end of a scene
When you end the scene, LingunAI reviews your side of the conversation and gives you:
- A score out of 100.
- A one-line assessment of your level.
- Up to 5 corrections, each with an explanation.
- Up to 3 more natural ways to say something you said.
- Up to 3 strengths, so you know what to keep doing.
Holding corrections until the end is deliberate. Stopping you after every mistake would turn a conversation into a drill. Saving the feedback for the end lets you work on fluency first and accuracy second, the same split Paul Nation draws between fluency development and language-focused learning in his “four strands”.
Who it’s for, and tips
Roleplay suits learners who understand more than they can say, which describes most people between A2 and C1. It’s also a rehearsal space before a real trip, appointment or interview.
- Start one level below your reading level. Speaking usually lags behind understanding, so a lower level lets you focus on getting the words out.
- Use Custom Scene for what’s coming up. Rehearse the call with your landlord or the first meeting with a new team before it happens.
- Run the same scene twice. Read the feedback, then replay the scene and use the more natural phrasings it suggested.
- Speak, even when typing is easier. Voice input makes you build each sentence at conversation speed, which is the skill you’re there to train.
How it connects to the rest of LingunAI
For open-ended speaking without a set scene, the AI tutor has a voice Practice mode that replies briefly in the target language and usually ends with a question. For writing, the grammar coach checks your text and gives the reason for each change. And every word you save from a conversation lands in your flashcards, where spaced review brings it back until it sticks.
Questions, answered
01 Can I practice speaking a language with AI?
Yes. In LingunAI's roleplay you hold a spoken or typed conversation with an AI character in a real-life scene, such as a café, an airport or a job interview. The character replies in the language you're learning at your CEFR level, and its replies are read aloud.
02 What roleplay scenarios can I practice?
There are six ready-made scenes: At the Café, Airport Check-in, Job Interview, Hotel Check-in, Doctor Visit and Shopping. You can also set up a Custom Scene on any topic, such as returning something to a shop or talking to a new landlord.
03 Does the AI correct my mistakes during the conversation?
No. The character stays in the scene and keeps you speaking the language instead of stopping to correct you. When you end the scene, you get a score out of 100, a one-line level assessment, up to five corrections with explanations, up to three more natural ways to say things, and up to three strengths.
04 Which browsers support voice input for roleplay?
Voice input uses your browser's built-in speech recognition, which works in Chrome, Edge and Safari. In any browser you can type your replies instead, and the conversation and feedback work the same way.
05 How much does AI conversation practice cost?
Roleplay costs 2 credits for every 3 AI replies. A scene runs for up to 20 of your messages, and LingunAI doesn't store the conversation after it ends. The free plan's one-time allowance of credits lets you try it before choosing a paid plan.
