Dark Nights for the Turtles

A2 · Elementary · 1 min read

Kofi was twelve, and he lived near a beach where sea turtles laid their eggs every June. This year a new hotel kept its lights on all night. When the baby turtles came out of the sand, they crawled toward the lights, not toward the sea.

Kofi and his friends carried the baby turtles to the water at night. They collected signatures and wrote a letter to the hotel manager. One night the manager came to the beach. He saw the baby turtles walking the wrong way. "I will turn off the lights from nine to six during turtle season," he said.

The next night, hundreds of tiny turtles walked to the moonlit water.
