Everybody in the family adored Grandma Rosa's soup, yet nobody had ever discovered what made it so special. One Sunday, eight-year-old Leo decided it was time to find out.
"Grandma, what's the secret ingredient?"
"It's in the blue jar on the top shelf," she replied, without looking up from the onions.
Leo dragged a chair across the kitchen, climbed up and lifted the lid. The jar was empty except for a folded slip of paper. He opened it and read a single word: "Time."
"That's not an ingredient," he protested.
"Wait and see," said Grandma.
So he waited. He watched her peel the vegetables slowly, stir the pot and hum an old song that he vaguely recognized. She asked him about school and his friends, and she told him about her morning at the market, who had been rude to whom and what the tomatoes had cost. The soup simmered for three whole hours. When it was finally ready, Leo took a spoonful, closed his eyes and thought for a moment. "It tastes like the whole afternoon," he said.
Grandma only winked.
