Grandma's Secret Soup

C2 · Proficient · 2 min read

Everyone in the family worshiped Grandma Rosa's soup, and no one had ever pried its secret out of her. One Sunday, eight-year-old Leo, who had lately begun to suspect that adults concealed things on purpose, resolved to put the question outright.

"Grandma, what's the secret ingredient?"

"It's in the blue jar on the top shelf," she said, without looking up from the onions.

Leo dragged a chair across the tiles, climbed up and lifted the lid with the solemnity of an archaeologist opening a tomb. The jar was empty save for a folded slip of paper, which he opened with infinite care. It bore a single word: "Time."

"That's not an ingredient," he objected.

"Wait and see," said Grandma.

So he waited. He watched her peel the vegetables without haste, stir the pot in slow figures of eight and hum a tune he almost recognized. She asked about school and about his friends, and in exchange she gave him her morning at the market: who had been rude to whom, what the tomatoes had cost, which of the fishmongers was lying about the sea. The soup simmered for three full hours while the window clouded over and the kitchen filled with a fragrance he would spend years trying to find again. When at last it was ready, Leo took a spoonful, closed his eyes and gave the matter his full attention. "It tastes like the whole afternoon," he said.

Grandma, who had waited all day to hear exactly that, only winked.
