The Double Surprise

B1 · Intermediate · 1 min read

Last Saturday was the tenth anniversary of my friends Pavel and Nadia, and both of them had the same secret idea. Pavel planned a surprise party for Nadia. Nadia planned a surprise party for Pavel. Pavel told her he had a meeting until nine, and Nadia told him she had a work dinner until nine. Then each of them asked friends to hide in the apartment.

At half past eight I let myself in with the spare key and a huge cake. It was dark, but I could hear whispering. People were hiding behind the sofa, under the table, in the bathtub and in the wardrobe. I squeezed into the wardrobe next to a man I did not know. "Are you from Pavel's side?" he whispered. "No, Nadia's," I whispered back. There was a long silence. "Then," he said, "who is surprising whom?"

Someone sneezed, a balloon burst, and a key turned in the lock. Pavel and Nadia walked in together, and thirty people shouted, "SURPRISE!" The couple stared at the crowd, at the two cakes and at each other. Then they began to laugh, and they did not stop for five minutes.
