Cinder is a young dragon. He cannot make fire. He only coughs, and small sparks come out. The big dragons laugh at him. One cold night he walks down to a village. The baker, Mrs. Marsh, sits by her cold oven. "The storm put out my fire," she says. "Everything is wet." "I only have sparks," says Cinder. "Then cough," she says. Cinder coughs all night. In the morning the oven is hot, and everyone has warm bread. Mrs. Marsh puts up a sign: "Cinder, Official Oven Lighter." His sparks are the right size.
