The Giant Who Sat on the Sunrise

A2 · Elementary · 1 min read

They say this happened long ago. One morning the sun did not come up. For three days the valley stayed dark, and the village was cold and afraid. The men climbed the hill and shouted, but they came back pale. "There is a mountain up there," they said. "It breathes."

Mira, a girl of nine, said good morning to everything. She took bread and milk and climbed the hill alone. The mountain was a giant, sitting with his eyes shut. "Good morning," said Mira. "Excuse me, sir. I think you are sitting on the sunrise."

The giant opened one eye. "Am I? I'm sorry. Everyone shouted at me, so I thought nobody wanted me here." He stood up and sat down on the next hill. The sun came up, and the valley turned gold.
