The Girl Who Carried the Fire

This is an old story. The village has one fire in the square. Yara is twelve. She helps the old keeper, Sula. One night the rain puts out the fire. Winter is near. Yara walks to the Smoking Mountain, three days away. There the ground glows red. She puts a coal in a clay pot. She walks home. At the river, the log is gone. She carries the pot over her head. At dawn she brings the fire home!
