Long ago, in the mountains of Ethiopia, a boy called Kaldi looked after goats. One evening he saw something strange. His goats were jumping and dancing, and they were not sleepy at all. They had eaten red berries from a bush.
Kaldi tried a few berries. Suddenly he felt full of energy! He took some to the monks at the monastery. The head monk was afraid. "These berries are dangerous," he said, and he threw them into the fire.
Then a wonderful smell filled the room. The monks took the beans out of the fire, ground them and added hot water. That was the first coffee. That night the monks stayed awake and prayed. People say it is only a legend.
