The Mayor Is a Cat

B1 · Intermediate · 1 min read

Before the election in a small village, the two candidates argued every day about parking. Neither of them would give way, and the villagers grew very tired of listening. So a group of bored teenagers decided to play a joke. They printed posters of Mr. Whiskers, the baker's fat orange cat, and put them up all over the village. "Vote for Whiskers," the posters said. "He has no opinion about parking."

On election day, the villagers went to the polling station with a strange feeling of rebellion. When the votes were counted, Mr. Whiskers had won by 212 votes. The council held a solemn ceremony, and the new mayor was presented with a very small sash, which he ignored completely.

His decisions were made in the only way he knew: by sleeping on important documents. Council meetings were moved to the baker's, where there was always warm bread, and they ended at five o'clock so that everyone could go home for dinner. A fish stall appeared in the square. And as for arguments, they simply stopped, because it is impossible to stay angry at a cat who is asleep on the table.
