Pip was a small garden robot. Old Mr. Haruki bought Pip to grow tomatoes on his roof. Every day Mr. Haruki sat in the sun and talked to Pip. He missed his wife, Emi. She had loved sunflowers.
Pip's program said, "Tomatoes only." But over the months, Pip learned to ask questions: "What color?" "What did she like?" One spring, Pip found Emi's old jar of seeds and planted a row of sunflowers.
In July, Mr. Haruki saw the yellow flowers. He sat in silence for a long time. Then he said, "Thank you, Pip." Pip wrote in its log: "Error: no task assigned. Result: happiness."
