The Twelfth Face

A2 · Elementary · 1 min read

Tess bought an old house with a blue door. Under a board in the attic she found a photo of eleven people on the front steps. On the back it said, "Twelve of us. Find the twelfth." She counted: eleven.

Mr. Hale from number nine looked at it. "These are the Rowes," he said. "There were twelve children. Little Maud always hid from cameras." Tess looked closely. In the upstairs window there was a small face and a hand on the glass. In the attic, on the windowsill, someone had scratched M.R.

Tess wrote a letter. A month later an old woman stood in front of the house. It was Maud! She touched the letters in the attic. Then Tess took a new photo: eleven people on the steps and Maud in the window, waving and laughing.
